ISUZU X-Rider Black: The Exclusive Dark Knight

There’s something special about driving a vehicle that few others will ever own. With only 150 units being produced, the ISUZU X-Rider Black isn’t just another limited edition — it’s an exclusive club on wheels.
During its media launch, our nCARndla team had the privilege of spending three days behind the wheel, testing its limits from Hillcrest to Clarens, and on to Johannesburg. What we discovered was a bakkie that marries raw capability with a refined, dark aesthetic — a true collector’s item that can work hard and look good doing it.

Performance and Drive
At the heart of the X-Rider Black lies Isuzu’s trusted 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing 110 kW at 3,600 r/min and 350 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,600 r/min. On paper, it’s efficient — on the road, it’s surprisingly alive.
From the smooth coastal climbs around Hillcrest to the gravel backroads of Clarens, the 6-speed automatic transmission shifted with seamless precision, while the shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system handled changing terrain without hesitation. Whether cruising in rear-wheel drive or clawing through technical trails in 4x4, the X-Rider felt composed and unbothered.
Fuel economy also shone as a major highlight. Over the full journey, we recorded an average of 5.58 L/100 km, underlining Isuzu’s long-standing reputation for mechanical efficiency.

Rugged Beauty: Design and Exterior
If looks could intimidate, the X-Rider Black would do it effortlessly. Dressed in “Meet Kettle” black paint, it exudes quiet aggression from every contour. The 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels with red lettering, the tubular black sports bar bearing a laser-cut red “X” emblem, and the LED projector headlights all combine to create a head-turning presence.
Additional touches — black roof rails, side steps, and a black bumper guard — complete the look, striking the perfect balance between style and strength. This isn’t just a bakkie; it’s a statement that says: I look the part — and I can back it up.

Interior and Comfort
Inside, Isuzu strikes a near-perfect balance between rugged functionality and modern sophistication. The black leather seats with red stitching and the embroidered “X” logo are stylish yet supportive, while the multi-function steering wheel with matching red detailing ties the sporty theme together.
The 8-inch AX2 infotainment system performed flawlessly throughout the trip — connecting seamlessly via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Our long drives were made easier by the responsive interface, clear sound quality, and simple controls.
Meanwhile, the air conditioning coped admirably with both coastal humidity and highland chill. Add to that a rear USB port, and you’ve got a cabin that’s every bit as thoughtful as it is tough.
It’s not luxurious for luxury’s sake — it’s comfort engineered for everyday adventure.

Off-Road Capability and Towing Strength
What impressed us most was the X-Rider Black’s composure across contrasting terrains. Outfitted with General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tires, an 800 mm wading depth, hill descent control, and a rear diff lock, this bakkie handled the technical sections near Clarens with grit and control.
With a 2.1-ton towing capacity and a robust chassis foundation, it’s equally capable of hauling equipment, boats, or adventure trailers with ease. The X-Rider doesn’t make a spectacle of its strength — it simply delivers, faultlessly and quietly.

Safety and Stability
Isuzu prioritised safety without compromise. The X-Rider Black includes front, side, curtain, and knee airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control, and Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD).
Even when challenged on uneven terrain or high-speed corners, it inspired confidence — stable, predictable, and impressively composed.

Verdict: The Black Edition Legacy
After three days and hundreds of kilometres across tar, gravel, and obstacle courses, one truth became clear: the ISUZU X-Rider Black isn’t just a special edition — it’s a celebration of power, design, and exclusivity.
Those fortunate enough to secure one of the 150 units will own more than a bakkie; they’ll own a piece of Isuzu history — a machine that performs with authority, looks ready for Gotham’s streets, and proudly marks its driver as part of an elite group.
Stylish yet capable, efficient yet powerful, it’s the perfect match for adventurers and professionals who demand individuality without sacrificing reliability.
